What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an international measure used to determine whether a person is at a healthy weight. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters.
BMI Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
Example: Weight = 70kg, Height = 1.75m
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86
BMI Limitations
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and body fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI while being perfectly healthy. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.
BMI Categories (WHO)
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obese Class I: BMI 30 to 34.9
- Obese Class II: BMI 35 to 39.9
- Obese Class III: BMI 40 or higher
